There have been many rumors floating about on the whereabouts of myself. Well I am here to set the record straight. AznSupreme23 says that he spotted me in Malibu shooting a video for Kanye, well we all know Ye has risen to a level where he refuses shoot a video on his home planet of Earth anymore. LEGEND. speculates that I was snooping around where I shouldn't have been and got shot with my camera. That's obviously not true.

The truth is fairly simple. When I used to talk about being in Paris making movies, I now am in Paris making movies. I used to have time to lie and make up extravagant stories. Now, I simply don't. Bon voyage bitches.

But don't worry. Although the photographs are gone, the videos will pop up from time to time. And if you haven't had your fix of the best videos ever made by a guy my age with my equipment in the town of Richmond dealing with hip hop, then just take a look at the new spawn of artists with their Hi-Def cameras and their iMovie skills.

To them, my advice: If you are going to cut (drag clips to make shorter) in iMovie and have type, do not use that generic font. Also, if you asked me what type of camera I use and went out and bought it, use it correctly. Turn the hi-def on. Lock the exposure. And please, focus.

For everyone else, the photoblog will return. And I will return with a new blog once I return from Paris (and graduate).

To all those who don't read the hip hop blogs but read mine, a recent video of mine was leaked online. I posted Nickelus F's EPK the other night on Vimeo and went to bed to wait for it to upload. I woke up to set it to private only to find it everywhere online. This is unfortunate because we forgot to add a very important part which now will not be known until later.

The other night Wilco came to The National here in Richmond and performed a full show all by themselves. Tickets were sold out 18 minutes after the show but I got a call that morning and managed to take some photos. I read somewhere that the doors opened at 8 so I arrived at 8. Unfortunately, I misread. Doors opened at seven and I arrived just in time to miss the first three songs and my ability to get up close to the band.

I managed to get some decent shots with my 85mm from the crowd. Despite spotting my middle aged professors lower their heads to light a blunt during the performances, the show was quite enjoyable. Packed to the rafters but enjoyable.

Chasing 'Chasing Forever'.

Millz's new mixtape Chasing Forever is almost out and I am pretty hyped about it. I've heard most of the reference tracks and can't wait for the release. As well as the release of all the videos we did. It's been months!

Right now we're editing the video for Understand Me, the second music video that will be debuted sometime in the future. It was shot last week with the whole 2AM team making an appearance. This one's gonna be a scorcher!

Show Review: New Found Glory and Saves the Day

Upon hearing about The 10 Year Anniversary tour of New Found Glory’s self-titled album, my heart was bursting, especially since Saves the Day was also on the bid and to top it off the show was on Valentine’s Day. What better way to celebrate? There were no questions to be asked, my attendance was mandatory.

Opening acts included up and coming pop-punk band Fireworks who released their first full-length All I Have To Offer Is My Own Confusion in 2009. They sparked the show on a very energetic note. Next on the big the nine-year-old power –pop five-piece hellogoodbye took the stage and took us back a couple years with their chart topping single “Here (In Your Car)”.

Throughout the first two sets, the huge Saves The Day banner hanging behind the bands distracted me. I was filled with anticipation; what songs would they play and from which albums? They opened with All-Star Me from Through Being Cool, their full length from ’99. After a few relatively newer songs from Under the Boards and Sound The Alarm I was beginning to wonder if shy, emotional lyricist Chris Conley would address the audience at all. He skipped anything formal and mockingly said “Happy Easter, we love you.” After a couple older songs from Stay What You Are and In Reverie, he thanked us, claiming “All I can think to say is I love you, we feel like the luckiest band in the world.” The mood of their set was passionate and genuine, especially since they played Third Engine, their most heartfelt single from Through Being Cool, which they rarely play live. Seeing Saves The Day back on the touring scene really helps with suspense leading up to their release of Daybreak, later this year.

Headliners New Found Glory took the stage and I was anxious to see how their Self-Titled tribute would go. With the first chord, I recognized track one, Better Off Dead. The crowd was pleasantly surprised when they played the entire album start to finish. New Found Glory has a dedication and love for music most other bands can’t attest to. The band still has all five original members, 13 years later. Their passion is reflected in their fans, who have stuck with them from the beginning. They changed their set, from the traditional self-titled backdrop, to their new-age look and stole the show with six more hit singles from Sticks and Stones, Catalyst, and Not Without a Fight. Since most bands are opposed to playing old songs because they’ve grown, over the years, into a different sound, my respect for New Found Glory grew immensely. NFG takes pride in their music, and their fans take pride in them.

The widely expressed sentiment “I’ve liked them since I was like 14” had me surrounded by giddy smiles; it was as if we had all time warped to dancing and singing in our rooms, seven years prior. My heart wasn’t the only one bursting; this was certainly a heartfelt Valentine’s Day for all of us.

I got the chance to follow biggest rapper in Richmond backstage to the Drake concert. Nickelus F is releasing his newest and biggest album to date called My Season Premiere and I was lucky enough to be doing some filming for another future project with him releasing soon. He just finished an interview with Complex the day before and was supposed to be one of the guests introduced on stage during the VCU Homecoming Concert. But let's just say that didn't happen. This may remain an untold story to the public but in the meantime, here are a few pics of Drake during the show.

It's been a while since I lied to all you loyal readers, so I thought why start now? I just recently dropped around $250,000 in a studio downtown, some light kits and had renovations done for sky lights that I have full control over to naturally light objects from any direction with the use of mirrors. Very complicated. Imagine that last scene in that one Bruce Lee movie. Here's a coffee bean I shot for Folgers, Starbucks, Gevalia, Maxwell, Illy and bunch of others (that can afford me). Here's a little hint, all the coffee brands use the same one coffee bean in all their pictures. They just copy, paste, rotate. So next time you're in the coffee aisle, have yourself a look.

This is a simple and modest blog post about my day yesterday. It started out with my girlfriend offering me to take her car to go and discuss some business things at another friend's house. The meeting was over and all was well until I hopped in the car and realized the battery was dead. My friend Arnold and I made a few calls until two of his friends came within minutes to help me out. When the first failed, the second one tried. So it's not the battery I say and now I'm starting to freak out because it's not my car. But the car of a former Marine with a mighty gun collection.

Then minutes later, more backup came in two good friends of mine. Ian, the roommate and DP and Charlie the gaffer. I felt relieved because they can usually fix things on a film set so they must know how to fix a mere automobile. They tinkered. Googled. And tinkered some more. A few hours since since the whole mess started the truck would start again. As we turned the corner to my girlfriends house, I saw Ruthie, Ian's girlfriend riding her bike to provide any further assistance. The cavalry had arrived, in a little girl on a bicycle.

I felt like I was a lost little boy being returned to his worried Mother's house on horseback by a group of magnificent seven. When everything started to crumble, I asked, "Why me?" What have I done to deserve this? I looked into myself and back on recent events where I acted less than what I would consider moral. And when I realized this, things seem to fix itself. I'm not putting this all on some divine being that fixed my car, Ian and Charlie did, but rather perhaps something bigger than us planned these events series of events to make me a better person and realize the good people around me.

Maybe it's just my character to make up a story of like this. Or maybe this never happened at all because I lie a lot on this blog. Who knows?

I spent this New Years with some old friends from High School. With the Christmas feeling still lingering, we hung out and watched the ball drop in NYC on the television. Classic stuff.

Being well settled in our new apartment for over four months, While Ian was out being a real person, Nathan and I stayed at home doing nothing but play video games and eat ramen noodles. Not only did Caron Butler from NBA 2K9 fill our monitor, but so did many others. I also was still mourning over the loss of the reanimating Macbook Pro.

This was taken on the top level of the parking deck on Shafer and Broad. I was with fellow photographer Raven on a clandestine operation with his zoom lens. This is my favorite picture of my old D60 with the fish on it. I love photos like this, very Saturday=Youth don't you think? Just another school day in Richmond.

I got my new bike a few days ago and was out again with fellow bike guy Raven. This obviously wasn't taken by me but was photographed by, you guessed it, Raven. We were on the Cary Street Parking Deck for this one. One of the very few pictures of me on a bike, let alone the blog. That's so Raven. This was around the time the HotCop was running around.

My friends from home came and skated Richmond for a day. I showed them around and we hit up White Wall to City Hall all in an afternoon. It's refreshing to every now and then be around something that I have no skill at doing. Refreshing like an ocean wave hitting your face. Even though that usually reminds me of drowning.

For the first time in a few years, VCU canceled classes because of the snow. We all enjoyed a few days off either frolicking about or staying warm together inside. It snowed again later in the year canceling class for sure if we weren't already on Winter Break.

This was one of the very first pictures I took with my new D90. These set of pictures were also some of the very last pictures taken with my D60. My brother recently got a new car, so we took it out behind some grocery store and took some photos. The lighting turned out to be pretty decent for a loading dock. They have the coolest anyways don't they? Eventually we went out to eat, which is where I made my first video with the camera.

The Persistence of Everything. This was VCU Cinema's first major production shot in 35mm with the Arriflex BL3. It was what brought all the Cinema students to where they are now and created and strengthened friendships, for the most part at least. This photo is even more Saturday=Youth. Every time I see it I just think it's the perfect picture. The horizon line, the perspective, Brooks always posing for the camera, everyone doing something. Okay, well Brooks pretty much makes the photo with his torn up red shirt around his neck.

Friday, April 10th, 2009.
This was the first time I dabbled in concert photography. It happened to turn out to be the best show I've ever been to. Love him or hate him, Wale was finally getting big. Being on stage with him allowed me to feed off of the energy given from the crowd. They really love this guy. Being so close to DC in Richmond, you're with the fans that are like, "This guy lives a few hours north from here!" and without the "I knew about this guy since he lived down the street from me." crowd. I made a video which would later be found on elitaste.com, Wale's managers blog.

The lighting was great as always for the opening act. Except, for Brand New... Every shot I took was great. Things were going on everywhere. I felt like I was apart of something more than a hip hop show.

Arnold, Jonathan, Deji, and Erik. SHHO. Student Hip-Hop Organization. I had no idea who these guys were at the time but they seemed to be having a ball up in the VIP balcony. Little did I know the man on the left was the one responsible for the show and is the founder of SHHO, which I currently work for. I meet back up with them a few months later in NYC to work on a brand book.

Also at the show was Jack Labadie, a Richmond painter who gave Wale a painting of himself which he loved. It's good to see Richmond leaving a mark.

No one knew who this cat was when he took the stage. He said he was J something. J. Cole and was just signed to Rocafella Records. He took the mic and performed a few acapellas. Definitely left an impression on the crowd and would later appear on a number of tracks with big names and drop another of his own mixtapes, The Warm Up.

But who I have to thank for this opportunity was Jon Q from Earthtone, one of the opening bands for Wale. He basically told me to sneak through the backdoor of the venue and hang out with my camera. It worked. That's where I met the band and would later work with almost all of them in the future.

Monday, April 27th, 2009.

Today, we shot my friend Caleb's movie 8 Ball. There are a few things that I expect to do every now and then, and making movies is one of them. Not just making a little video, but being on set with a script supervisor and ACs and PAs and genies.

That night we came to my place and whipped up the only thing I ever whipped up that summer. Some fried rice. I like fried rice because you can throw whatever in it. Shrimp, ground beef, hot dogs, Spam. That summer involved many a food nights.

When I'm back at home, there's not much going on. I usually resort back to skateboard photography. Sometimes local pro Billy Roper pays a visit to our mutual hometown and rips. I shot a Day with Duy with him as he skated the park at Osbourn.

2009 was the year of road trips for me. Whether it be the ATL for a few days to be a Confederate soldier, or a few hours to DC in between call times to see The Limits of Control, it's always good to be in good company. Here we are stopping by Danny's Mother's house in the middle of the night to steal some food.

The end of VCU Cinema's 2nd production in 35mm. Steam Heat brought everyone together, if it didn't already tear everyone apart. To this day the unsolved mysteries haven't been solved... But here was another opportunity to try and remake the joy that was Ghosting.

SHHO brought Raekwon to Richmond for a meet and greet and a performance to promote his latest album, Only Built for Cuban Linx II. I got a chance to say a few words with him which is always cool. The performance was well, let's just say due to the management, it was lackluster aka non-existent. But who cares, I met the Chef.

This was the first time I got a chance to hang out with Rebecca. If you don't know, then you don't know. Let's just say she's just as important as me. We're working on a few things in the future. These were some of the lovely ladies on set of the first feature I worked on, A Little Closer. With the whole crew, when we were shooting, we were fooling around for the most part. Not sexually, just regularly. When weren't shooting, we were playing flip cup. Sometimes at 2 in the morning. Good times with some folks from NYC.

Saturday, September 19th, 2009.

This weekend meant guns, BBQ, fast food, and motel rooms. Ian, Danny, Dylan and I had all went to Atlanta to film a Civil War Reenactment of the Battle of Atlanta. When we weren't in the trenches avoiding Yankees sneaking cell phone calls in battle, we were out in town trying to indulge in all the fast food that Atlanta and the surrounding area had to offer.

We made an effort to throw the old pigskin every time we made a gas stop in the middle of the night. We also made a bad ass playlist including 20 songs we hand selected.

Friday, September 18th, 2009.

I dabble from living in between Richmond and Manassas. Usually when I'm home it's because my family meets up together at someone's house and just relax. And there's nothing more relaxing then picking pears from the pear tree in the backyard on a pleasant afternoon. Maybe, lying down in front of the ocean but that's a few miles East. Unfortunately, I came home on this occasion because of a death in the family. Our Grandmother, my Father's Mother. We make new friends and share our lives with new people ever year, but with it also comes loss.

The Fall semester is well on its way and that always means it's closer to my Birthday. I like this picture because it was taken on my "balcony" in the dark night. I also wasn't in it but I showed up anyways, weird.

Same night, different balcony. A real one this time. Duda and Riley hanging out at Danny's. Fun night involving late night pizza and trying to solve a card trick Charlie and I had. Fun fun! I always thought this picture was cool. Focused to a few inches in front of me, everything visible was out of focus giving it a subjectively cool effect. Most of my pictures aren't experimental at all, so this was neat.

Saturday, October 31st, 2009.

The biggest event of 2009 for me was going to New York. I went alone on a 8 hour bus ride but left with so many great friends. I met up with Corey Smith from Earthtone and the Wale show back in April to catch up. They were playing a show at the Greenhouse with the Sugar and Spice Dance Group, a collection of NYC's top dancers. I was treated as a VIP and lived like a Straight Edge Rock Star. Life was good. If you're in good company in New York, you feel like your life is making such progress. I wonder where I would be if I stayed an extra few days there. It was the most surreal time of my life.

Our friend Kesha invited us to her place for dinner, drinks and even a game of Taboo. It was fun feeling like we were back in high school again. I stood at the balcony in Chelsea overlooking the city and seeing the people in the wee hours of the night being thankful for what I had. We said our goodbyes to our friends and the city after the guys played one last song at her place.

I also met up with Arnold and Erik from SHHO to talk about their brand book. We took in the sights and hit up all the boutiques to bring back some inspiration as well as some tees. Black and white shots were meant to be taken of people. And New York City is the best place to find people. Planned shots leveled perfectly can seem good most the time. But sometimes you just need to have the camera around your nexk and snap pictures of interesting/hot people as they walk by. It also helps if your friends don't want to seem like tourists. True candidness, interesting angles.

When we got back from Richmond, it was like a smack in the face. We aren't really rock stars. We aren't superheros. Most of the time we don't rock the cape but the business suit. We live in Richmond, VA. But we're hoping to make a name for ourselves and for our city. Enter Score One for the Little Guy. the group consists of Brad Oblivion and Corey Smith. Two rappers from Richmond. Plus me means photo shoot. We tried to blend tough guy face with playing in the leaves.

Thursday, November 12th, 2009.

Thrice and Brand New toured again and I got a chance to photograph them at the National in Richmond. Concert photography is the ultimate test. Lights change in a snap of a shutter. Guitarists never stop moving. Security is always on your tail and the kids behind you are jealous of your front row seat. But it also allows for some of the most interesting shots.The lighting is there for you as well as the subject matter. All you have to do is take the picture. It's like portrait photography times 10.

For some reason, I love black and white pictures with a lot of noise. Just throwing that out there. Here's Teppei of Thrice looking sharp.

Saturday, November 21st, 2009.

In November I got to work with ATE Clothing doing some photography and video work for the Richmond clothing line. We wandered the woods with a pair of models wearing nothing but leaves. It was a tad bit nipply but hey, I wasn't complaining.

I also went around with them when they gave Thanksgiving Dinners for their annual Ategiving ever November. Their website just launched so check it out and buy a tee. Some of what they earn will go to a child in need.

My final big project of the year was working with Jack Labadie, a painter from Richmond that I mentioned earlier. You can check out the video of him we did when his new site drops early 2010.

He does paintings of Jay-Z, Michael Jordan, and the King of Pop just to name a few. Watch out for his paintings in the new year.

Thursday, December 24th, 2009.

It seems as though it always comes back home to skateboarding. With the death of one, the birth of another came. More concrete, more skaters, more supervision. It's in a different town, a couple minutes away. It's a drastic change from being on a set with thousand dollar cameras and craft to being on a set with a one-man crew in yourself.

There were many times that I didn't have a camera handy. I wish I did but the memories will still stay in my head. The Great Cinema Field Day, working on both 48 Hours and winning, having my best friends throw me a surprise birthday party. They say scent is the most powerful catalyst of memory, well I didn't really smell anything those days worth remembering.

I had started this entry a few days before New Years Eve. I meant to publish it the day of but obviously it just didn't happen like that. It seems as though each year of my life gets better and better. It's exciting to see what the 2010 has to offer.

Movies of the Year.

These are the coveted Movies of the Year here on theworstkids. These movies have shown exceptional creativity, beauty, and overall traits of great cinema. These movies are the Movies of 2009!

Unfortunately there is only one movie this year... And that is Bigelow's The Hurt Locker. It's not that other movies weren't good. I heard Antichrist was cool but guess what. I haven't seen it. I'm surprised I even saw this movie. Anyways this movie is badass. That's about it. It's all it needs. When a movie reaches a certain point of badassness, it absorbs all other aspects of filmmaking. I'm not sure what that means, but if you watch the movie, I'm sure you'll like it. I just can't wait for the Break Point/Hurt Locker Blu-Ray Two Pack to come out! Hello Christmas 2010.

These are not the best albums of the year, or are they the highest-selling album of the year. Heck, the might not even be apart of this year! Nevertheless, they are my albums of the year. The albums from 2009 that flooded my most recently played on iTunes.

Actor turned rapper turned actor turned father of six kids with three different women turned rapper Mos Def's The Ecstatic was one of my early favorites this year. Dope cover from the movie Killer of Sheep, which was too dope for me to appreciate, topped of the international feel to be a great album. His comeback was great. Girl's Album had all the indie music writers in the world clean their glasses with glee. Beating out Bitte Orca and Hospice and all those other Brooklyn noobs, the pitchforked San Fran Band made it on this list leaving all the other cats off. With such enormously evocative voice... ah I'll leave reviews to other real blogs. This album rulz! Album in one word: LAURA!

The Cudster's debut album was my favorite album of this year and had the most plays of probably all the other albums combined. Cudiguy had me going early with his mixtape and finished it off strong with this concept album. His music moves me even when I'm not a stoner dude. Album in one word: BEST.

To be honest, I just recently got this album and I'm not sure if it should really be on here since I haven't listened to it much. But what the hell, here it is. Clipse's Til the Casket Drops. Album in one word: NEW!

Blueprint 3, my trip to New York City really made me realize how big Jay-Z is. He really does run NYC and it didn't take him too long to do so. Jay brings it and also brings along some great collaborations as well. So many Blueprints to follow, means so many new great artists to watch out for. The Warm-Up cough. J. Cole cough. Album in One Word: HOV.

Love him or hate him, John Mayer is one of the best guitarists out there. Yeah, there are those virtuoso noobs and that Laiho cat. But this is John Mayer, the douchebag you love to hate. Whatever that means, Battle Studies took me a while to get used to. It's definitely different from Continuum and cannot be touched but also should not be compared. This album has a nostalgic feel to his 83 days. And me being an avid @johncmayer fanboy, I had to put him on the list. He can break up with me any day. Album in one word: ASSASSIN.

DC Maryland and Virginia are a little confused with Wale's debut album. It isn't like his mixtapes. He did make it big. He is from where you're from. Don't hate on him just because of that. This album shows a lot of versatility. There are slow parts and fast parts... Badass... Album in one word: DMV

You either knew about them with Chunk of Change and love them to this day, or heard them everywhere after Manners came out and hate them for it because your a music snob. Either way, it's been playing on my stereo ever since CoC but ended until Lil Scotty Mescudi took over. Album in one word: doo-doo-doo-do-do-do-doo-doo-do-do (Intro to Little Secrets).

This Parisian band was definitely the most played in the cars I've been in and the most sung with confused lyrics as well. Their up-and-down melodies give to catchy music for everyone. I don't know what that last sentence meant either... Album in one word: French.

I've read some bad reviews about Mr. Hudson's debut album, but I listened to it until I loved it. And it worked! And when Cudi's verse dropped, I loved it even more. Do the face. Do the face! Album in one word: Kid-Cudi-is-in-it!

A new skatepark opened in town recently and I checked it out with a few dudes who skateboard. That sentence was funny... Anyways, it's got a nice set of stairs but the rest is pretty awkward to say the least. You have to get a running start on most things but it has a nice plaza feel to it. Whatever that means... We had the wrap party for the international 48 hour project this past Thursday for the production of Outliers. The team won a few years back and had the film shown at Cannes. Hopefully we'll get the honor to do again this go round.

I was an AC in the wind, rain and snow for 28 hours on set along with some other great filmmakers. We ended with a great final product about apocalyptic Richmond. Stay tuned for more news.

I'm currently back in NYC for the time being handling some business for a future project. While my last trip was short but epic, this trip will be fairly long but hopefully equally as epic, when I'm not working at least. Here are some photos from last Friday's show at The Greenhouse in New York City.

The night was spent with some amazing talent. Great music from Earthtone and talented dancers from the beautiful Sugar and Spice girls. We hung out with super nice Kesha Nichols and her girls in VIP and had a great time through out the night.

As I mentioned in the previous post, three of my friends and I took a road trip down to Atlanta a few weeks ago. On our way back, we calculated that the ride home would be about nine and a half hours. So we made a nine and a half hour playlist.

Each of us would choose thirty "chill" songs, not knowing who picked what, and have it play in one mega monster playlist on the ride home. Battle of Hotlanta.

My friends and I were sent to Atlanta a few weekends ago to work on a Civil War film for Richmond local Kevin Herschberger of LionHeart Filmworks. 10 hours to and from in the car with your best friends is always fun. It included all of the regular road trip activities. Massive iTunes playlists, playing football at gas stations at 3 in the morning and farting in the car...

We stopped at a lot of food places local to the area that we've never been to. Trying to get with the workers at Krystal, getting lost and owning shirts in Varsity and traveling to various Cook-Outs to try to find one that sells shirts.

But when we were working, we were working. I was shooting amongst the Confederate soldiers. Musket, musket, DSLR. Hanging out with the re-enactors helped give me a better understanding for there Southern pride. A Confederate flag means much more then any negative connotations associated with it. Plus they're a lot more interesting then dem Yankees.

A Little Past A Little Closer.

Last weekend we wrapped on the production of A Little Closer. A group of NYU Graduates and other New York City dwellers came down to Richmond, the directors Matthew Petock's hometown, and began shooting his first feature length film.

Here is another timely installment of Friday's Vimeo Video. Or shall I say Videos for this occasion. As you may have noticed, there are several videos this week, all in Standard Definition. As you may have also noticed, it is not Friday and I have also not done a FVV in about two months now. Anyways, this weeks edition is meant to show those young and naive filmmakers out there that not everything has to be in Hi-Def. Don't get caught up in upgrading your equipment when you have a perfectly fine tool if you know how to use it. The bad part is, most of you noobs don't. Hopefully these videos will help you get to that point.

I give you D90! Yeah, the D90 can shoot in HD. It can do a many great things as I have experienced first hand, but it can also do great in SD. Check out this video by Matt Vella. Who needs a narrative right?

Umm, this one has naked chicks in Standard Def.

You can also go towards the animated route. Who cares if it's in Hi-Def? They're just lines right?!

This one is my personally favorite. It was shot by the father of one of those boys in the film, Jarbas Agnelli. Who says you need Hi-Def to tell a good story? Hell, who needs words, unless of course you have the voice of Jose Gonzalez. I say, all you need is a Super-8 camera, a slo-mo sequence and a made in 1974 sticker on you, for vintage purposes.

OK, so maybe this SD=HD reasoning is a little flawed. All of these films could have looked better in Hi-Def! But then how else would I have showed you four videos in one blog post? Huh?! Anyways, DSLR HD, lesbians in HD, animations in HD, Super-8 HD, everything is better in HD! Get used to it or get left behind ya nubs.

So the 48 Hour Film Festival is over now, and the results are in. Our team, The Detroit Athletic League Golf Tournament aka The Martin Agency's film Neighborhood Watch won the title of Best Film, as well as Best Costumes and Best Directing along with the Audience Choice Award in Group C. Props to my actual favorite movie of the festival, Taking Stock by the Plaid Connection.

These guys are a group mainly comprised of current and graduate VCU Photo/Film students. It looked beautiful and was wonderfully lit by their DP, Kuni Ohi who won for Best Cinematography. So I haven't posted in forever because I don't like you guys. I don't like what you stand for and how you live. Anyways! This last weekend I was an assistant camera on the 48 Hour Film Project in Richmond. It was really fun and I got to work with a lot of cool people and equipment. Now normally I would be caught dead in a movie theater after dying from the realization that I just paid for a ticket to see a horrible movie. However, because of a man named Zach Galifianakis, I could say I enjoyed The Hangover. This wasn't his best performance or anything like that, but it's Zach Glaifinakes!

Directed by the Old School dude, this was your typical bro movie. I didn't like Dude Where's My Car? but I love The Office so I loved Ed Helms so I liked the movie. And of course there was Zach Galfiniekies. Then there was the dude who got raped up the b-hole in Wet Hot American Summer. He was alright I guess. Plot was predictable but fun. Heather Graham was in it. And her boob too. So was Zach Gandolfini! And his penis...

I would say the whole movie led to the last two minutes of the film. Which happened to be during the credits. But anywho, with sequel in the works, this won't be the last time we see these dudes on the big screen. Zach's Penis...

Flicker, this Summer's first production, wrapped on-time yesterday after a week and a half of shooting. We've shot in two different houses, an abandoned Save-A-Lot with hospital zombies, and a concrete cemetery with over 70 dead bodies. We'll continue to trudge on with shooting Jackson and Joseph, and pull focus over 20 foot drops on a ladder, play on car rigs, and shoot some horses. With cameras as well as guns.

Summer productions began weeks ago and I tagged along on the shoot of Flicker. We shot inside an actual house. Our actor Ken Peebles' stare pierced through my lens and into my fragile little soul. I've never been more scared. I still don't know if he hates us all or just stays in character. Making him walk through a bunch of dead bodies in a hot concrete field didn't help either. Summer began a few months ago and I have been busy as ever with sound design, setting up Kinoflows, accepting high paying jobs, not getting phone calls back and writing scripts. But one thing that hasn't changed is eating good food. And what better way to dine then to dine for free while your friends cook and clean the dishes for you in exchange for a place to stay. In this age of pirating and The Death of High Fidelity, it seems that music is more or less doomed. But when acts like Passion Pit's Manners is leaked weeks before its May 19th release date, I couldn't help but snatch it. Every now and then I come across an album that I can truly sit through in its entirety. Manners gives me faith that artists can still thrive through this failed American capitalistic music industry. I thought it was disappointing at first after having their EP Chunk of Change win the game of King of the Hill on my iTunes Most Played list, but Passion Pit's debut album slowly gained five stars across the board. Hopefully I won't have to crown it Album of the Summer this early. What do you think?

As the words came from Wale's mouth, the Richmond crowd erupted. Dropping names such as Kid Cudi and Mickey Factz, one could really envision the great future of hip-hop.

Last night I was lurking for the Wale show at the National in Richmond, VA when I felt such an emotion during the set that is indescribable. So on that note, I won't describe it. Just know that when Wale's crew and I rushed center stage with the crowd screaming, the feeling was rich.

It was a good show, despite the long wait for Wale, with Richmond locals EarthTone opening up for the big man himself. Props to Jon Q and the rest of the guys for helping me out tons. I lost a hoodie, but the experience was worth it.

If you did not know, a few weeks ago I was in a production as the 2nd AC to the first ever 35mm production VCU has had. And if you remembered, I already wrote about this here.

Anyways, this was apart of an impromptu behind the scenes documentary type thing I did when shooting The Persistence of Everything. I shot it all using my D90 with a 50mm and 10.5mm Nikon primes. And when I wasn't behind the camera, either Caleb, Danny, Ian, Forrest, or Gerry was filming.

Persistence of Everything.

So for the past two weeks I have been busy working on production with VCU Cinema's Persistence of Everything as the 2nd AC. Written and directed by Michael Bryant after receiving a research grant, we started production on Saturday at 5:15AM and wrapped on Tuesday at around 4:30PM. Aside from having our teacher Rob Tregenza there, we also had LA cinematographer, Andrew Gianetta come out and help us. Andrew was Rob's former student and has worked on many films. Charlie Harris also joined us helping with the crane and ATV shots. HE's worked on films such as Dumb and Dumber and Final Destination 3D.

Set in 90s Bosnia, The Persistence of Everything is a Post Modern film about a boy who is able to see into the afterlife. Shot with an Arriflex BL3 30mm camera, this has been VCU's biggest production to date. It was a great experience for everyone involved and taught us more than a classroom ever could. For four long days, we all felt what it's like to really be filmmakers.

Who watches Watchmen? Well I did. But I didn't enjoy it that's for sure. And before you say anything to me, no I did not read the book. But why should I have to read the book to enjoy the movie? Why can't I go to the theatre, sit and watch a good movie? I'm not saying the movie was horrible. I guess it was kind of entertaining. Things looked cool. I saw boobs. Heck, I even saw dick. More dick than boobs. But I'm not complaining about that. My cinema friend said the cinematography was amazing. I thought it was just too textbook. And maybe it was just too textbook because it the shots came directly from the panels in the comic. When it comes down to it, if you take away what Watchmen has in its graphics, you end up with a three hour long movie with no name superheroes and no name actors that give no name performances. Story was okay, I guess...

Well here it is. I officially got my hands on the new camera yesterday, well I guess two days ago since it's 1 AM. I've taken a few shots with it and the big display makes the pictures look a lot better. With the autofocus motor, I can now work with my lenses better. I've taken two old ones from a film camera lying around the house so now I have a 20-70mm as well as a 70-200mm. But of course, there is video. My brother took the family out to dinner to celebrate his new job and probably to show off his new car. I took this opportunity to shoot some video. Above is the end result. Edited quickly in iMovie, I'm happy with the results. You can watch it in HD here.

I guess the good folks at Crumpler took note of my new camera and decided to send me one of their 5 Million Dollar Bags. Which is great because my old one was getting a little dated. I love this bag because it's small and easy to use. It's not a backpack camera bag so you don't have to set it on the ground every time you need to switch lenses. Just wrap it around your shoulder and your good to go. It's got enough space for what I need; a camera and three accessories. Mix and match with flashes and lenses. Of course there are smaller pockets for other things, however there's no tripod holder thing. HINT HINT. COUGH GIVE ME A BRAZILLION DOLLAR BAG END COUGH.

Yesterday I performed my civic duty in showing the Skate Crew from Manassas around these parts. It was a day full of bombing hills, nollie heels and McDonald's. Watching ten kids speed down a hill downtown at 30 MPH all wearing black with their hoods up glowing in the orange street lights at night is a pretty cool sight.

Jet-lagged, I arrived back home tonight from hiking around ground zero of Chernoybl. They have recently opened it as a tourist attraction where you can customize "I Survived Chernobyl" T-Shirts and eat CherNuggets. Unfortunately to maintain the history of the area, the place still looks gloomy and blue. There is also a place where you can watch reenactments of various events that includes gunfire and explosions. It was pretty fun.

As much as I love the hectic yet satisfying city life, sometimes I just need to reconnect with the moral compass that is nature. And there's no better way to do that than to go to a children's petting farm. This weekend, I opted out of the lavish parties and fine caviar to go pet some deer or antelope or whatever those animals were at Richmond's Maymont Park. After seeing these poor animals fenced in and considering making an Amnesty International for Wildlife, we threw around the ol' pigskin made with real pigskin! Having that once living pig leave my fingertips as I launched it across the field really made me think back on my varsity days. If only I didn't tear my ACL...

We've all seen at least one boxing movie right? Rocky, Ali, Raging Bull, Million Dollar Baby. And we all know what usually happens at the end. The protagonist will either come back in the final round to overcome his rival in a heroic series of blows or lose the match yet have the respect of the nation or become a quadriplegic and receive euthanasia by an old man who used to star in spaghetti westerns and is known for saying, "You've got to ask yourself a question: 'Do I feel lucky?' Well do ya, punk?!" We see it all the time right? Well what do you do when there are two protagonists facing against each other in the ring? What do you do when you want to root for both fighters but can't imagine what would happen if one lost. What you do is just sit back and watch.

Crying Fist is a movie that tells the story of two characters who don't meet until the final round of the lightweight championship. One is an ex-con ex-dreadlocked dude fighting for his dead father and dying grandmother while the other is a homeless, washed up former silver medalist at the Asian Games fighting for his son and his pride. The end result is mind blowing. Well not really. But it's still a good movie. You may recognize one of the boxers to be an Oldboy. It's directed by the same guy who did City of Violence, the movie which I enjoyed and wrote about earlier. The only bad thing about this movie is that it might be trying to do to much at once. It feels like The Pursuit of Happiness meets Ali meets American History X meets Skull meets Boy Meets World meets Meatloaf. It easily could have been two different movies, but that's what makes this film different. It's not a regular boxing movie. Some fights are shot in one single take. From the friendly glove tap in the beginning of the match to the knockout at the end, you can see the actors go at it in real time. No match cuts of a punch to a guy turning his head and spitting water. But all in all. It was a time well spent. Oh yeah, and if you get really uncomfortable seeing male buttocks and ten year old penis remember to close your eyes.

The conference championship games finished this weekend. The two teams going to the Superbowl are the Arizona Cardinals and the Pittsburgh Steelers. I was happy with the results, I’m a Redskins fan, so the Eagles losing is as enjoyable as a soft kiss from an elf on an ancient medieval battlefield, or licking jelly off Jessica Alba’s elbows. The Steelers winning was rather annoying, seeing how most of their fans annoy me, and Troy Polamalu reminds me of Slash, which makes me uncomfortable. Overall Superbowl 43 should be a game filled with big hits, flashy plays, big hats, and fishy gays. I won’t be there; I will be promoting this blog in Akaa Finland, home of the first cherry popsicle.

I received a gift from a good, old friend the other day. Dan Gordon, a newly famed artist from New York who I went to school with took time out of his newfound hectic lifestyle to look back on the little people in his life. He sent me an autographed four of a kind, two piece work of art from his memorable exhibition last year. The only other people in the world with this original is his mother, Barack Obama and the Dalai Lama. I am proud to showcase this above 60 inch flatscreen.
